Red Tape Reduction Commission releases Report

The Red Tape Reduction Commission issued their recommendations report yesterday. See www.reduceredtape.gc.ca/index-eng.asp

The RTRC also published summaries of the reports prepared by external experts, including by members of the RIAS Inc. team — Doug Blair, Jim Martin and Derek Ireland. See www.reduceredtape.gc.ca/heard-entendu/summary-sommaire/menu-eng.asp.

The government response to the RTRC’s recommendations is expected within a few months.

RED TAPE REDUCTION COMMISSION UPDATE

The Government of Canada’s Red Tape Reduction Commission (RTRC) has finished the initial phase of its work (see “What Was Heard” report). RIAS Inc. also prepared an expert paper for the Commission in 2011, entitled “Measuring Compliance Burden in the Stock and Flow of Regulatory Activities”, a summary or which should be available along with other expert papers on the RTRC website soon. The RTRC’s final recommendations report is also expected soon.

RIAS Inc. has been working closely with a new client, the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA), throughout the fall, and we look forward to continuing our involvement with CAIA in the future.

RIAS Inc. has recently been commissioned by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Transport Canada to provide regulatory impact and cost-benefit analysis services.

RED TAPE REVIEW COMMISSION LAUNCHED

The Government of Canada recently announced appointment of the Red Tape Review Commission. The website also contains a Discussion Document, Cutting Red Tape and Freeing Business to Grow, which Doug Blair prepared for the Red Tape Review Secretariat.

RIAS Inc. has recently been commissioned by Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to develop an economic impact assessment tool for significant regulations. RIAS Inc. will also be developing a training program for Ontario regulators to implement the new tool.

RIAS Inc is also working with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to develop a socio-economic risk assessment framework for Aquatic Invasive Species.

Jim Martin and Doug Blair recently prepared a report, Creating a World Class Regulatory System in Ontario, for a consortium of industry associations. The report provides an in-depth assessment of the Ontario regulatory system, and has been very well received by senior officials in the Ontario Government.
